That time has now come for PLAY as well.
So close to #50!
“A compelling blend of complex storyline, stunning graphics and cerebral gameplay.” 10/10 (OPM 26, December 1997)
That original incarnation of Official PlayStation Magazine ran until 2004, focussed solely on PS1 a true single-format mag.
Official PlayStation 2 Magazine launched in 2000, the two mags runs overlapping for several years.
Bridging the gap was PSM2, Futures unofficial PlayStation mag, which launched slightly before OPS2.
“A compelling blend of complex storyline, stunning graphics and cerebral gameplay.” 10/10 (OPM 26, December 1997)
And then there was PLAY!
But did you know the connection goes even deeper?
Internally, our product codes are still labelled PSM as a result.
OPM #1, OPS2 #2, and PSM2 #2
(A peek behind the curtain: within the magazine, the farewell feature’s filename is PSM46.feat_thanks.indd.)
In effect, this means every issue of PLAY has been secretly moonlighting as PSM as well.
With the brand change, a lot of people assumed our workflow changed too.
“Visually it’s so far ahead of anything else out there it shatters your expectations… This is a PS3 showing what it’s truly capable of and delivering a landmark piece of explosive entertainment you can’t afford to miss.” 9/10, Leon Hurley (OPM #28, Feb 2009)
As Ive always told them: it really didnt!
Well, we wouldnt be gamers if we didnt believe in extra lives!
Special acknowledgement needs to go out to the final team members.
“Sharp characters and an utterly bonkers narrative combine with gorgeous visuals to create a wholly unique experience, and this is the thrilling and magical adventure that you and your Vita deserve.” 9/10, Louise Blain (OPM #72, July 2012)
Jessica Kinghorn, Miriam McDonald, and Milford Coppock have made my years across OPM and PLAY a breeze.
A path that, sadly, now comes to an end.
It’s a pleasure to have Metal Gear Solid on the cover of the final issue as well.
“Just like the super-satisfying weaponry, Rift Apart shoots on all cylinders to set a new bar for PS5. We’ve never had a game like this before.” 10/10, Oscar Taylor-Kent (PLAY #3, August 2021)
Talk about a snake eating its own tail!
It’s the kind of legacy send-off we couldn’t have better wished for.
Enough of you asked for a Halloween issue over the years, so here it is!
PLAY #46, the final issue, is on shelves on 15th October.
My final gift to you.
We hope you enjoy reading this historic issue.
It’s been a blast, truly.
For now, I’m signing off.
Enjoy playing the next one!
