Mutant Year Zero: Zone Wars is a novel attempt at the war game formula.
If you like Mutant Year Zero, this is a great companion piece to the series.
However, it needs to do quite a lot to pull in a more casual observer.
They are as charismatic as the characters they are based on, and perfect for trying to paint yourself.
Each fits into its own compartment and it’s relatively easy to put away.
This provides you with two new factions, extra terrain, and bonus scenarios.
It’s the only way to play with three or four people, too.
Everything feels high quality but not necessarily flashy.
It’s an easy process that can be a lot of fun with friends.
This touches on what makes Zone Wars work so well.
It’s one of those games it’s possible for you to’t help but do ridiculous things in.
This is encouraged by the turn order system.
“A lot of games skip over the terrain part when they do start boxes.
Whichever faction is grabbed first gets to pick their corner and the rest of the table follows.
This basic system determines much of the game so you have to get used to it quickly.
On a success, it will often hurt your enemies.
On a failure, you will take the brunt of that damage.
This is both awesome and Zone Wars' biggest departure from a more traditional strategy game.
Sometimes, things just go wrong.
Perhaps one of the things that most enunciates Zone Wars' more quick-paced action is how its health works.
If it’s possible for you to count to five, it’s possible for you to track health.
Your characterswilldie, and this is part of the fun of it.
Should you buy Mutant Year Zero: Zone Wars?
Despite this, it’s such a unique experience that it’s worth the rather hefty price of admission.
Mutant is a memorable franchise with a unique sense of humour and an enthralling world.
This short skirmish game made me enjoy Mutant just a little more.
You won’t spend three hours pondering moves and lining up minis to the exact right angle.
If you want to play Zone Wars with three or four people, you have to double the cost.
It never plays it straight so you have to get on board for the best time.
